Shipbuilding Contract Tremendous Opportunity: MP

Tobique-Mactaquac's MP is urging local munfacturing companies to take time and attend development sessions for future suppliers of Irving's Halifax Shipyard. Mike Allen says the $33-billion shipbuilding contract is a tremendous opportunity for businesses in the region to obtain sub-contracts in future projects. Allen tells K93 News manufacturers should also stay linked in with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) which will be helping businesses take advantage of the shipbuilding at the Irving Shipyard.   Allen says the Government Agency may help companies that need to transform their operations in order to get involved by offering financial support.   ACOA and J.D. New Armoury Promised in Edmundston

The federal government has announced plans to build a new armoury in Edmundston. On Monday, Feb. 20, Minister of State Bernard Valcourt and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway Keith Ashfield were in the city to make the announcement. The new facility will accomodate "A" Company of the First Batallion of the Royal New Brunswick Regiment and will be used for training and equipment maintenance. The new facility will replace the current armoury which the Department of National Defence is leasing -- will be built on Martin Street. The project is in the design phase and when designing is complete construction work will go out to tender. The government did not give an estimated date of completion. Read More

Fire Destroys Drummond Cottage

A fire that destroyed a cottege in Drummond is under investigation. Early Monday morning the Drummond Fire Department were called to a structure fire at 1204 Canton Road. Fire Chief Ben Morin says upon arrival a cottege was fully involved and not much was left. Morin says the cottage belonging to Morel Cote was being lived in but no one was home at the time of the fire. 15 Firefighters were on scened intil 9:00am extinguishing the blaze. According to the Red Cross they have assisted two adults with personal-care items and are getting additional support from an insurance company. The cause of the fire is unknown at this point, and the Fire Marshall is conducting the investigation. Read More

Perth-Andover crowns Queen Gamblin

The Village of Perth-Andover has a new Queen. Allison Gamblin impressed the judges and was crowned last night, Monday, Feb. 20. Gamblin is joined in the Royal Court by First Princess Alyssa Hatchard, who also earned the title of Miss Talent. Jamie Godsoe was named Second Princess, while the contestants chose Samantha Michaud as Miss Congeniality. Read More

Fire forces family out

A family of four was forced from their home on Thursday, Feb. 16, in Grand Falls after a fire broke out. There were no injuries in the blaze, which was contained, but caused extensive smoke and water damage. Canadian Red Cross volunteers were contacted to help out but say the family's insurance adjustors are already looking after emergency motel lodging and other immediate needs. There was no word on the cause of the fire at 642 4th Avenue. Read More

The New Brunswick Association of CBDC Women in Business Network Grand Falls Region will host its annual general meeting (AGM) tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 21. The AGM will begin with an HR Initiative for Women Entrepreneurs in New Brunswick. McCluskey returns as Chairman

The Grand Falls Sports Hall of Fame Committee reviews its agenda and budget, which were presented during last night's, Wednesday, Feb. 15, annual general meeting. (Photo by Angela Ferguson) The Chairman of the Grand Falls Sports Hall of Fame was re-elected at last night's, Wednesday, Feb. 15, annual general meeting. Charles McCluskey says he's happy to serve as chairman once again and is looking forward to seeing this year's inductees be honoured on the wall. McCluskey says one of the main reasons the committee took the time and effort to create a Sports Hall of Fame is the citizens have been asking for it for years. At last night's meeting, McCluskey also presented a manual, which outlines details and guidelines about the process of finding and nominating inductees. The manual will be presented to Grand Falls Town Council, which donated $10,000 to make the Sports Hall of Fame possible. Perth-Andover Woman in U.S. Custody

A 24-year-old Perth-Andover woman is being held in the U.S. after being charged with trying to smuggle drugs across the border. Authorities say Patricia Smith and 20-year-old Caleb Jewett, of Mars Hill, Maine, were arrested last week at the Bridgewater Port of Entry -- near Centreville. They say with the help of a drug-sniffing dog 786 methamphetamine pills were found hidden in the rear doors of their vehicle. Both of the accused have been charged with importation of 50 grams or more of a mizture or substance containing meth. They are being held without bail pending detention hearings expected next week.
